Description

Error Message

VxVM vxdisk ERROR V-5-1-534 Device emc_clariion0_250: Device is in use

Cause

Please note that the above messages are harmless and can be safely ignored.

Those messages are generated by the vxattachd.  vxattachd is a Site Monitor Daemon.   vxattachd is enabled by default even in environment where Site-based Allocation is not used.  The vxattachd daemon monitors Veritas Volume Manager  (VxVM) for disks being attached, and reattaches a detached site if the disks that belong to that site become accessible.   vxattachd analyzes the output of the vxnotify  command, and waits for a Dynamic Multipathing (DMP) node becomes enabled.  When a DMP node becomes enabled, vxattachd attempts to online the disk.

In some cases the DMP node enabling notification can occur at the same time when a diskgroup which comprise the disk is being imported.   In this situation the vxdisk online command issued by the vxattachd can generate the error.   For example, hds9500-alua0_96 is already imported as diskgroup "datadg".   Onlining the disk can generate the error.

hds9500-alua0_96 auto:cdsdisk    datadgH8     datadg       online

# vxdisk online hds9500-alua0_96
VxVM vxdisk ERROR V-5-1-534 Device hds9500-alua0_96: Device is in use

Please note that the above error is harmless.  It only indicates that the disk is already associated with an imported diskgroup.

The error messages generally appear in an SFCFS environment when the Cluster Volume Manager (CVM) shared diskgroups are imported during the online of the cvm_vxconfigd Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) resource.

Resolution

Those harmless error messages.

Applies To

Veritas Storage Foundation Cluster File System (SFCFS)  on all platforms.
