Cause

When sharing VMDK files between virtual machines, SCSI BUS sharing mode for the corresponding SCSI controllers can be set to either Physical or Virtual modes.

Setting this mode to Physical causes SCSI reservation conflict and I/O errors on DMP. This issue occurs in LVM and raw disks as well.

Resolution

Disable simultaneous write protection for the shared VMDK files, using the procedure from Enabling or disabling simultaneous write protection provided by VMFS using the multi-writer flag

Issue/Introduction

Mirroring volumes using virtual disks from VMDK on a VMWare virtual machine produces IO errors and errors for reservations. This issue occurs only when VMDK files are shared between two or more virtual machines.
