Description

Error Message

Veritas Storage Foundation and High Availability Startup did not complete successfully
vxesd failed to start on (hostname).

Cause

Normally, a Brocade HBA driver by default is loaded with the system installation.

A search for "bfa" (the driver file name for the Brocade HBA) results in the following output:

# find / -name bfa -print
/lib/modules/2.6.18-308.4.1.el5/kernel/drivers/scsi/bfa
/usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-308.el5-x86_64/include/config/scsi/bfa
/usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-308.el5-x86_64/drivers/scsi/bfa

A review of the output of "rpm -aq" does not show any Brocade RPM's loaded.

Upon investigation, it is determined that an updated Brocade HBA driver was loaded onto the system.

Using "rpm -aq", the following is seen in the output:

Summary     : bfa kernel module(s)
Description :
This package provides the bfa kernel modules built for the Linux kernel 2.6.18-274.el5 for the x86_64 family of processors.

Resolution

Engineering may not specifically test an updated third party driver for compatibility with Storage Foundation product.

QA  testing is performed against the bundled modules and drivers that are supplied with the Linux kernel updates from the OS vendor.

Removal of the Brocade driver rpm and verification that the original OS files are in place per the above "find" output results in successful start and proper operation of the "vxesd" process.

Issue/Introduction

Upon installation of the Storage Foundation product, the "vxesd" (Veritas Event Source Daemon) process fails to start. The process failure is noted in the Storage Foundation installation summary. Subsequently, the "vxesd" process cannot be started upon reboot of the system or manually with the following commands:  # /sbin/vxesd  # /usr/sbin/vxddladm start eventsource
