VCS ERROR V-16-10031-12502 (%serverName%) Volume:%resourceName%:offline:Could not stop volume %volumeName%

Resolution

A volume may fail to stop if a process is maintaining a handle on the volume, preventing it from stopping. This may occur if at least one process that uses the volume is not terminated at the time that the volume attempts to stop.

Operating system utilities, such as fuser, can be used to determine which processes are maintaining a handle on a volume.

In a clustered environment, a process that is not monitored by a cluster resource will not necessarily stop when the cluster group goes offline. In this situation, adding an additional cluster resource to monitor the process may resolve the issue by ensuring that the process is stopped by the cluster when the group is taken offline.

Issue/Introduction

When taking a volume resource offline, VCS reports that the resource cannot be taken offline because it "could not stop" the volume.
