Cause

This issue occurs when shsvcs calls COM interface to query disk extents via a VDS provider it may return a NULL value, causing the WMI and Hardware shell detection services to terminate unexpectedly.

Resolution

The svchost.exe crashes when an shsvcs.dll calls COM interface to query disk extents via a VDS providers it may return a NULL value. This issue has been identified and a hotfix to overcome this issue with new vxvds providers which are included in SFW Cumulative Patch 2 (CP2) and later. The Cumulative Patches (CPs) available on SORT via Patch Finder.
