Cause

Vxdmp marks a path as "disabled" in response to fatal SCSI errors that are received while sending I/O to that path.

Resolution

1. Review the following logs:

    • system log
Review any device events that are reported during the time frame that the vxdmp events occur. In particular, look for SCSI events. The name and location of the system log varies, depending on the platform.

    • /etc/vx/dmpevents.log
Check for path events. The errors reported here may provide insight as to the nature of the SCSI error that led to the path being disabled.

Figure 1 - Example of SCSI errors recorded in /etc/vx/dmpevents.log. In this case, SCSI inquiries are failing, causing the path to be disabled.

2. Check for unlabeled disks. Unabled disks may cause the DMP probe idle LUN functionality to mark the path as disabled. Examples of disk labels include SMI and EFI.

3. Prior to 5.0 MP3, the error may be triggered by arrays returning unexpected responses to the dmp_probe_idle_lun events. If it is confirmed that there are no underlying problems with the SAN, dmp_probe_idle_lun can be disabled to prevent nuisance errors.
