Resolution

Description
The Storage Foundation for Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) provider allows for backup applications to utilize the FlashSnap option of Veritas Storage Foundation for Windows as a solution for Volume Shadow Copy backups. This FlashSnap license error occurs because the Veritas VSS provider is automatically registered with Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service even when the Storage Foundation for Windows Snapshot option is not installed.

Symptoms

  • Error "Storage Foundation FlashSnap License is not installed" appears in the Application Event Log.
  • Error "IsVolumeSnapshotted FMR License not Installed" appears in $vssprov$.log.
  • Error "Application Error SERVER Reporting queued error: faulting application vssvc.exe, version 5.2.3790.3959, faulting module vssvc.exe, version 5.2.3790.3959, fault address 0x0004b44e"
  • $vssprov$.log grows to a large size due to the messages that are being written to it.
  • Note: By default, $vssprov$.log is located in the following path: %vmpath%\Logs\

    Solution

    Follow these steps to resolve this issue:

    1. Disable the Veritas VSS Provider service in Windows services if it is set to Automatic.

    2. From a command prompt, run: vssadmin list providers

    3. Verify that the 'VERITAS Volume Snapshot Service Dynamic Provider' is listed (Figure 1):

    4. Unregister this provider by running the command VxVSSProvider /unregserver   (Figure 2)

5. Run: vssadmin list providers

6. Verify that the 'VERITAS Volume Snapshot Service Dynamic Provider' is no longer listed (Figure 3):
