Description

Error Message

SFW providers log the removal of the device after all paths lost as seen in the Event Log:

Information   Servername 801     VxSvc_pnp     Device \Device\Harddiskx is removed.

The Volume Manager provider will log related messages as harddisks are removed and the constituent disks from a diskgroup are lost:

Error         Servername 10001   VxSvc_vxvm     vxvm provider reported physical disk Missing Disk (Diskx) was removed or is temporarily unavailable.

When the devices return to the system VXIO driver will log:

Information   Servername 34      vxio     vxio: Harddiskx is re-online by PnP

Cause

After the multipathing software or array firmware upgrade, the operating system detects this and reinstalls its own driver.  During this process, the devices will be briefly unavailable to the server.

Resolution

The process to upgrade multipathing drivers and array firmware drivers involves a reboot for the updated drivers to take effect. It is recommended to add a second reboot to the procedure to enable the updated operating system drivers to be available for the devices on system startup.

Process:

1. Perform Multipathing or Array Firmware driver upgrade/update.
2. Reboot the server as required
3. When server comes back up, reboot a 2nd time

Following the 2nd reboot, this issue should be avoided.

Issue/Introduction

After upgrading multipathing software or the storage array firmware (and rebooting), harddisks may be shown in the VERITAS Enterprise Administrator (VEA) as requiring reactivation or volumes may even appear missing. Storage Foundation for Windows (SFW) will log messages showing that the paths are briefly removed shortly after reboot and return to the system within 30 to 60 seconds.

The multipathing software and MPIO may log the path / device removal during this time as well.

Note: SFW providers and MPIO will log the device arrival during the boot process (Application and System Event Logs).
