Attempting to initialise a disk of greater than 1Tb for use with Volume Manager (VxVM) on AIX may return "VxVM vxdisksetup ERROR V-5-2-2480 Disk is too small for supplied parameters"

Cause

 - The error is caused by a known issue as documented in etrack incident 607679

- Essentially older released of VxVM on AIX do not support use of disks of greater than 1Tb in size
 

Resolution

 - Upgrade to VxVM 5.0MP3RP3 or higher to obtain a fix for the issue (sfha-aix-5.0MP3RP3)


Issue/Introduction

Error "VxVM vxdisksetup ERROR V-5-2-2480 Disk is too small for supplied parameters" is returned when attempting to initalize a disk larger than 1 TB using vxdisksetup # /usr/lib/vxvm/bin/vxdisksetup -vi IBM_VSCSI0_29 format=aixdisk

In this example IBM_VSCSI0_29 maps to the operating system device hdisk17 which we can see is greater than 1Tb in size:
