Error Message

Sample SCSI opcode message:

Dec  7 17:36:02 dopey kernel: VxVM vxdmp V-5-0-0 SCSI error opcode=0x28 returned rq_status=0x10 cdb_status=0x1 key=0x5 asc=0x25 ascq=0x1 on path 8/0xc0

NOTE: The above SCSI opcode message is (5/25/1) returned from inactive EMC MirrorView LUNs and SnapView LUNS (vxdmp SCSI error opcode key=0x5 asc=0x25 ascq=0x1)

Cause

S.D.R.F content

SYMPTOM:
In-active snapshot luns cause trespass.

DESCRIPTION:
Inactive snapshot luns do not allow media access but responds to SCSI inquiry.

In Dynamic Multipathing driver’s  reconfiguration process,  DMP driver will try to enable paths of in-active snap luns as SCSI inquiry was succeeding.
But due to open failure these paths are marked as failed. So DMP does failover to secondary path.

Again secondary paths are marked as failed due to open failure.
This repeats at every DMP  reconfiguration process. As snapshot luns are trespassing it will also trigger trespass for source luns as per design.

RESOLUTION:
This is logical issue which is addressed by source change. Resolution is to detect in-active snapshot luns from error code 5/25/01 (vxdmp SCSI error opcode key=0x5 asc=0x25 ascq=0x1) and avoid doing failover.

Resolution

By applying the revised VRTSaslapm update prior to deploying 5.1 SP1 RP2 the effects described in this article should be avoided.

Veritas Volume Manager 5.1 SP1 RP2 P2 HF10 hot-fix

Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) 5.1 SP1 RP2 P2 HF10 (Linux) is now capable of suppressing "VxVM vxconfigd ERROR V-5-1-13583 read of lvm header blocks" failed messages for inactive EMC MirrorView luns. Please contact Veritas support to obtain the linux based VxVM hot-fix.

IMPORTANT: It is essential that the revised VRTSaslapm package be applied for the code enhancement introduced in 5.1 SP1 RP2 P2 HF10 to function as designed.

Issue/Introduction

Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) 5.1 SP1 RP2 (Linux) requires that VRTSaslapm version 5.1.100.301 be installed prior to installing RP2 to handle numerous interoperability issues with EMC MirrorView devices and the VxVM/DMP stack. Without applying the revised VRTSaslapm update, the server may encounter vxconfigd core dumps, server panics and events leading to what can be described as a server hang at boot-time.

Inactive EMC MirrorView and SnapView luns are addressed with the revised VRTSaslapm update.
