Cause
Veritas recommends limiting the number of files in a single VxFS directory to 100,000 files.
Resolution
To maximize VxFS performance, do not exceed 100,000 files in the same directory. This recommendation is applicable across all VxFS layout versions and Storage Foundation releases and has been documented in all Storage Foundation release notes.
As a workaround, divide the files into multiple directories, such that no single directory contains more than 100,000 files.
Issue/Introduction
Slow VxFS (Veritas File System) system performance is observed if the maximum number of files in a single directory exceeds 100,000.
Symptoms include taking an excessive amount of time for the following tasks:
- Listing the files in a directory
- Creating new files
- Renaming existing filesĀ
