VxVM vxedit ERROR V-5-1-1242 Volume is opened, cannot remove

 

Cause

The snapshot volume removal may fail due to stale VxVM object entries. 

 

Resolution

To remove the snap volume in such cases, steps below can be done: 
  1. Start the snap volume using the command: vxvol -g  start
  2. Start the volume using the command: vxvol -g  start
  3. Resync the snap volume using the command: vxvol -g resync
  4. Reboot the system to remove the stale entries.
  5. After reboot, snap volume can be removed using the command: vxedit -g -fr rm

 

Issue/Introduction

For Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM), there may be instances wherein any attempts to remove a snap volume will fail.
